Always make backup's!! A backup should always be made to a different location: if you backup to an external hard drive, you still lose everything in case of fire when your external drive is in the same building as your pc. Make several incremental backups of your files to make sure you don't lose anything.
The CMM has one server with a lot of diskspace in RAID 10 for backuping: the moldyn58. Everybody can get (at a simple request to Toon or Ward) a backup directory with a quota of 500 GB (can be increased at request).
A good backupsystem should be automatic. A list of good backup software can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_backup_software.
Windows
We have a bacula server running on molmod65.ugent.be. It has a Windows client program to do automatic, incremental backups. Ask Ward if you want to use bacula for backups.
Linux
You can use bacula or a this home made rsync script. Download the attachment and open in the script. Inside is all the necessary information to use the script. It will made automatic incremental backups to moldyn54.
